Matthew 18 and Reconciling Relationships

Moving from conflict magnification to conflict resolution and reconciliation

One of the most difficult areas when working as part of a team is that of conflict resolution. What do you do when two people within a team or church come into conflict, misunderstanding, frustration, disappointment, hurt or disagreement?

Historically the church has turned to Matthew 18, where Jesus instructs his disciples on this issue saying:

“If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” – Matt 18: 15-17

Three Streams of Missional/Ecclesial Multiplication

It is becoming widely accepted that the church has to go on a journey of change to respond to our changed context.  Most agree that the change must involve discipleship and becoming missional.

But there are all sorts of models and principles being strongly promoted. Our experience of involvement with many of these is that we need discretion and clear understanding of what is involved in each if they are to be implemented healthily.

Among many important insights, we recognise one particular understanding of the varied field that we don’t pick up elsewhere. Namely, that among the wide array of models for discipleship, mission and ecclesial multiplication… there seem to be 3 overall “streams”. We describe them as “streams” since they are broader than any one model and leaders are tending to favour and identify themselves with one rather than the others. And the leaders identification with one stream seems more about the network they are linked to than the appropriateness of the particular journey and challenge for them and their context. We briefly describe these here and go on to highlight key issues for their healthy development.

Cook @ Church

Interested in setting up a Fresh Expression of church?

Wanting to reach out missionally to young people?

Looking for a Fresh Expression that could link to your Messy Church?

Cook@Church is a Fresh Expression of Church where by sharing food, hospitality and worshipping together, young people can develop and deepen their faith, and build a small missional community.

Over the past 5 years Cook@Church has grown and evolved into what it is now. A group of young people meeting once a week to cook together, pray together and share a meal.

Recently the national Fresh Expressions team made a film about Cook@Church: www.freshexpressions.org.uk/stories/cookatchapel/feb14

This innovative and exciting fresh expression of church could be easily replicated in your community. It is surprisingly cheap and easy to do, provided you have access to a kitchen and a willing team of volunteers. You do not need to be an expert cook. Training and consultancy in setting up Cook@Church is available from Katharine Crowsley (the Cook@Church pioneer).

Some frameworks to explore Messy Church and discipleship

Some frameworks to explore Messy Church and discipleship

We often hear Mike Breen saying that “if you focus on making church you won’t necessarily end up with disciples, whereas if you focus on making disciples of Jesus you are bound to end up with church.” The observation has also been made that Jesus said, “I will build my church” but commissioned us to “go and make disciples”. So my focus in this chapter will be exploring ‘messy’ as church through seeking to better understand discipleship.
